Strategy

Farflung strategy for a higher tier

Keep one answer you can justify, then look for a less obvious country that also fits. A second thought can improve the tier, but neither a small country nor an unusual choice guarantees a high score. The gem is optional.

Evidence and scope

These are editorial suggestions based on the official rules checked on 23 October 2026, not a tested winning method. In the guide’s language example, Germany is Common while Luxembourg is Farflung. That illustrates less obvious answers; it does not make Luxembourg a top-tier pin on other prompts.

A four-step pin

Read the exact condition and any note. Keep a country you know fits as a fallback. Look for a second valid answer, then check the country under the pin before submitting. Move to the second choice only if you can explain why it counts; a correct Common pin beats an unsupported guess.

Choose correctness over a speculative gem

An Elusive answer earns 85 km and a miss earns 0. Five Elusive answers would total 425 km. That comparison is a reason to protect a valid answer, not evidence that this method reliably produces Elusive pins.

Use the untimed Practice round to learn the controls without spending the daily attempt. After a daily expedition, open a prompt at camp and inspect the answer map. Read why one unfamiliar country counts, rather than memorising a list of supposedly rare countries.

Questions

Should I always hunt the gem?

No. An Elusive pin is 85 km. A wrong gem hunt is 0. Five Elusive pins are 425 km.

Does a fixed list of rare countries work?

No. Rarity is per prompt. A country that is Farflung today can be Common tomorrow.
