How to play Farflung
One expedition is five prompts. Each prompt gets one pin. The default clock is 60 seconds, and Difficulty can switch that clock to 30 seconds. A pin that does not fit scores 0 km.
Evidence and scope
Checked against the official how-to-play and rulings pages on 23 October 2026. Difficulty changes the timer or map aids; it is not another expedition. Territory rules below apply from Expedition #9, with older expeditions retaining their original answer lists and labels.
The turn, in order
Read the prompt. Move the chart. Drop one pin. Drop pin locks the answer. If the clock hits zero, a pin you already placed is submitted for you. Leaving the tab does not freeze the clock. Come back after the prompt has expired and that prompt is 0 km.
Keyboard: Tab to the map, arrow keys to pan, plus and minus to zoom, Space or Enter to submit a pin you have already placed. You may reuse a country on a later prompt when it fits that prompt too. After the fifth result, choose On to camp to review the answers and your total.
Territories are not extra countries
The rulings page, checked 23 October 2026, lists 197 countries: 193 United Nations members plus Vatican City, Palestine, Kosovo, and Taiwan. From Expedition #9, a territory pin scores as the country it belongs to. Expeditions #1–#8 keep their original labels and lists: a Greenland pin there counts if Greenland or Denmark is on that expedition’s list.
- Guam and Puerto Rico count as the United States.
- Greenland counts as Denmark. Area questions use Denmark without Greenland, about 43,000 km².
- The Falkland Islands count as the United Kingdom. The islands’ own name does not answer a UK name prompt.
- Tahiti and French Guiana count as France. French Guiana is treated as part of France itself.
- Hong Kong counts as China.
- For names, flags, capitals, and official languages, use the country’s own, not a territory’s separate one. For a claim that a country lacks something, all of its land and territories must meet that condition.
- Western Sahara and the Siachen Glacier are labelled and, from Expedition #16, cannot take a pin. Antarctica is not on the chart.
- Somaliland counts as Somalia, Northern Cyprus as Cyprus, Crimea as Ukraine, and the Golan Heights as Syria.
Read the prompt and its note
Use the official 60-second default, optional 30-second clock, and 197-country map, rather than rules from another site using the name. Name and spelling prompts normally use the current short English name: Eswatini, not Swaziland; Czechia; DR Congo. Read the prompt’s note for any wider naming scope.
Each prompt’s camp entry explains its edge cases. If you think an answer is missing, use Should something else count? and provide supporting evidence. The official team reviews disputes weekly; an accepted addition can turn an earlier miss into a find. No ruling lowers an already recorded score.
Questions
How long is a Farflung turn?
60 seconds by default. Difficulty can set it to 30 seconds. There is no 45-second official clock.
Does Greenland count as its own country?
From Expedition #9, Greenland scores as Denmark. Expeditions #1–#8 retain their original lists and labels, and a Greenland pin counts if either Greenland or Denmark is listed.
Can I practice without spending the daily game?
Yes. Open How to play in the game menu, then Practice round. It is one untimed prompt, can be repeated, and does not use up the daily expedition.
