Using Farflung in the classroom
Use one practice prompt to discuss country locations, exact wording, and why an unexpected answer can still fit. This is an independent lesson proposal, not a tested classroom report. The official terms say the service is not meant for children under 13.
Evidence and scope
A possible worked example is the official blog’s Mekong discussion from Expedition #9. It explains why Myanmar counts through its riverbank on the border with Laos. Ask students to justify that inclusion, then compare their reasoning with the article. This is a suggested activity, not a claim that a class has used it.
A single-prompt lesson
Before opening the game, check school policy, network access, the official terms, and the privacy notice. Students can propose one country and then a second, explain which exact condition each meets, and locate them on the map. An unusual answer still needs to be correct.
This is an original lesson sketch, not a Farflung LLC teacher pack or a curriculum-alignment claim. No teacher pack was linked from the official how-to-play page, blog index, or changelog checked on 23 October 2026.
- Age and permission: plan for ages 13 and above. The official terms require a parent’s or guardian’s permission for anyone under 18 or under the local age of majority; age 13 alone is not sufficient.
- Suggested timing, not a measured duration: 3 minutes to read and locate, 6 minutes to compare two valid answers, 4 minutes to discuss the official explanation, and 2 minutes for an exit note. Adjust to the class.
- Fairness: use untimed Practice for controls, or clearly label a blog example as a past-prompt spoiler. Do not grade speed or rarity against students who may already know the daily answers.
- Territories: from Expedition #9, Greenland counts as Denmark. Ask why a territory’s separate name or official language does not become the country’s own.
Privacy and materials
Do not require student Google sign-in or collect player IDs or result histories for this activity. Guest play avoids a sign-in requirement, but is not data-free: the official privacy notice describes play reports, connection data, map-provider requests, and analytics choices. Review these with the school before use.
Make an original worksheet with blank fields for country, location, reason, and source. Link to the official explanation rather than copying a complete prompt or answer list, or reproducing the game’s artwork. Official terms reserve rights in those materials; this outline does not grant reuse permission.
Questions
Is Farflung suitable for primary school?
This outline is for ages 13 and above because the official terms say the service is not meant for children under 13. Players under 18 or the local age of majority also need a parent’s or guardian’s permission. School approval is a separate check.
Is there an official teacher pack?
No teacher pack was linked from the official how-to-play page, blog index, or changelog checked on 23 October 2026. This page is an independent proposal, not an official pack.
